Emotional Aromatherapy is a Mindbody talking therapy that addresses the whole person. It draws on the ancient practice of using essential oils and a holistic approach to wellness, supporting people in healing their physical illnesses by understanding the impact of their emotional state on their physical body. It works on the premise that the mind and body are completely interconnected and can help to identify and understand the emotional route of a person’s illness or disease, providing a framework and toolkit for them to heal.
One of my favourite examples to illustrate this is from a client who was 36 weeks pregnant with suspected gestational diabetes. Her midwife and consultant asked that she measure her blood glucose level four times a day (on waking and then one hour after meals). At our appointment she realised that she needed to do her finger prick to measure her levels test as it was an hour since her breakfast. However, before she did, she shared with me how frustrating the whole process and experience had been and was getting increasingly worked up as she spoke to me about it all. From the additional hospital appointments needed, to the failure of her consultant to book her in sooner for a growth scan, the list went on. She then took her blood sugar, and it was off the scale (13.4), higher than it had ever been before, even after a massive bowl of Ben and Jerry’s! Normal range is between 5.5 and 7.8. Instinct told me that this lady did not have gestational diabetes. My instinct was that she was periodically quite stressed, and this was likely to be raising her cortisol levels which in turn increases the amount of glucose you produce in your blood. So, I gave her a couple of drops of Lavender Essential Oil in her hands and asked her to close her eyes and take a few deep breaths. I put some relaxing music on, and we sat, with our eyes closed doing some gentle breathing. Five minutes later I asked her to take her blood sugar level again and it had dropped to 7.2. She has since had her follow up appointment and growth scan, does not have gestational diabetes and is due to deliver her baby naturally in a couple of weeks.
This is a great example of how the emotional stress we experience in our day-to-day lives can cause physical stress and illness in the body. But it also shows how with the right tools and techniques, emotional aromatherapy can help you to identify and manage those stresses before they become trapped emotions that can then ultimately lead to a whole host of diseases, from auto immune disorders to cancers, diabetes and heart problems.
